A post-war movement for greater autonomy resulted in the call for devolution (i.e. a separate parliament for Scotland). However, devolution was defeated by a referendum in 1978. While the Scottish have a strong sense of indentity formed trough their relationship with England, there are also regional identities within Scotland. Thus, there is much rivalry between Edinburgh and Glasgow, between Catholics and Protestants, between Highlanders and Lowlanders, people of the east coast and the west coast.
